India is currently leading in Coconut production compared to
the other large coconut producing nations like Srilanka, Indonesia, Philipines,
etc. In India, South India leads in producing coconuts. According to coconut
development board in Kerala, Kerala and Tamilnadu are the major producers of
Coconuts. 50% of the production goes for house hold consumption, the rest goes
in making other coconut products like the desiccated coconuts powder, coconut
oil, etc.
As a Coconut shell based activated carbon manufacturer, we
see the coconut clusters are highly displaced at least in south India and we
need to integrate them to the coconut producing farms. we need to constantly
look at increasing production of coconuts to retain the lead among the other
producing countries.
The charcoal manufacturers in Kangayam, Tamilnadu and nearby
areas pick up coconut shell from the Copras and use to make charcoal. The
reason for kangayam and near by areas are known for the charcoal production is
because of its coconut oil producing companies and additionally kangayam is
known for its high temperature that helps in drying the coconut shells soon.

Given this scenario, the coconut board should help and
encourage the farmers to sell coconut shells to the charcoal manufacturing
units directly than through the middle man. A Neither the charcoal manufacturer
or the farmer gets reasonable price.
Boyce carbon is planning to help the clusters in strategic
locations to sell the shells directly to the manufacturing unit in Tamilnadu.
this will give farmers to exercise control on the price that they sell it to
the units and charcoal making units will also buy shells from these clusters
directly. this will give them control on selling price.
